Behind the Art: Hannah Barclay’s Ceramic World

Hannah Barclay is the ceramic artist and beloved creative mind behind a lot of ceramics throughout our venues. Hannah’s been a close collaborator of MUCHO for a while, and it’s almost impossible to visit Centro 86 or Bar Planet without noticing the presence of her work in the space.

She was behind the beautiful light sconces and stamped ramekins that are peppered throughout Centro 86 beneath Pitt St. Perhaps more familiar, Hannah’s monolithic ceramic vessels at Bar Planet that feel like they were plucked from outer space (because they basically were).

Her large scale works feel like they’re from deep within the Earth itself, like a part of life. They’re living, breathing organisms that undulate in the spaces they inhabit, just as sentient as they are surprising to experience in the flesh.

Her ceramics embody meditations on memory and self, traversing gendered ideas of production and labour, and the subsequent trauma placed on the body and on the land. She pushes her forms through incorporating different mediums from the landscape to converse through time and place.

Hannah will be exhibiting her latest body of work at Sydney Contemporary 2025, we’re excited to see her latest works in the flesh. We wish her all the best!
